A nikah in UAE for tourists is not simply a matter of finding an imam and choosing a date. Residency, court jurisdiction, medical screening, wali arrangements and document availability can all affect whether the marriage can be completed through the official UAE process.

Can Tourists Have a Nikah in the UAE?

Sometimes, but the answer depends on the marriage authority and the couple’s circumstances.

Official UAE guidance for Sharia marriage has traditionally required foreign applicants to show identity and residency-related documents, and some cases involving a party or wali without UAE residency may need judicial approval.

The UAE Ministry of Justice marriage contract service also lists identification, medical documentation and witness information among the requirements for Muslim marriage applications.

Non-residency can affect more than one part of the file.

The authority may need to establish your identity, immigration status, where the marriage falls within court jurisdiction and whether additional judicial approval is necessary.

• foreign documents that may need authentication or translation;
• any nationality-specific embassy or civil-status requirements.

The biggest mistake is assuming that a passport is the entire marriage file.

What If the Bride’s Father Cannot Attend?

This comes up frequently with international couples.

A father being abroad is not automatically the same as the couple having no wali problem.

Depending on the circumstances, the authority may need to consider representation, another eligible guardian or judicial approval. UAE Ministry of Justice guidance specifically identifies certain cases involving an absent or unreachable wali as matters that may require a judge’s approval.

First determine whether the original marriage is legally valid, what certificate exists, and why the authority is refusing it.

In some cases, the issue is recognition or missing documentation rather than the absence of a marriage.

Do Tourists Need Premarital Medical Screening?

For official UAE marriage procedures, premarital medical screening can form part of the application. The UAE Government states that a premarital medical certificate is required for marriages conducted in the UAE.

That can affect timing, particularly for couples arriving for only a short visit.

Can You Just Arrange a Private Nikah Instead?

You can arrange a religious ceremony, but that does not automatically give you the same legal result as an officially documented marriage.

If you need the marriage for residency, immigration, birth registration or embassy use, the certificate matters.
