In-Person Nikah in UAE: What Does the Full Process Actually Include?

You want an in-person nikah in UAE. You want the imam or authorised marriage official, the legal paperwork, the certificate and, ideally, one clear answer to the question everyone asks next: “How much will the whole thing cost?”

Fair question. Slightly dangerous assumption.

There is an official marriage process, but there is not one universal total that applies to every Muslim couple. Your nationality, residency, previous marital status, wali situation and documents can all change what needs to happen before the Nikah.

What Happens During an In-Person Nikah in UAE?

For Muslim marriages processed through the UAE Ministry of Justice system, the process starts with an application and document review.

The couple then completes the required steps, pays the applicable government fee, communicates with the authorised marriage official and completes the marriage contract.

After the process is completed, an electronic marriage contract can be issued.

So an official Nikah is not simply “find an imam and say yes.” The ceremony and the legal record need to work together.

What Does the Official Marriage Fee Cover?

The UAE Ministry of Justice currently lists an AED 50 fee for the federal Request for Marriage Contract service.

That is the government application fee. It should not be confused with the total amount a couple may spend from start to finish.

Your real budget may also include medical screening, document preparation, legal translation, authentication or attestation, and professional assistance if your file is more complicated.

One official fee is a price. Your complete marriage file is a budget.

What Documents Do Muslim Couples Need?

The Ministry of Justice lists Emirates ID, a medical report and identification for the applicant and witnesses among the requirements for Muslim marriage applications.

Additional supporting documents depend on the case.

For example, you may need extra evidence if:

• one partner was previously married;
• a divorce happened outside the UAE;
• the bride’s wali cannot attend;
• one party is not resident in the UAE;
• foreign documents require translation or authentication.

Do You Need a Wali and Witnesses?

Witness identification forms part of the Muslim marriage application process.

The wali situation also needs to be checked before the ceremony where guardianship requirements apply.

That matters if you later need proof of marriage for residency, spouse sponsorship, embassy procedures or another official purpose.

A private religious ceremony and an officially documented marriage are not automatically the same thing.
