Interfaith Marriage in UAE: Can a Muslim Marry a Non-Muslim?

You love each other. Unfortunately, “we love each other” is not a marriage category on a UAE court application.

For an interfaith marriage in UAE, the legal route can change completely depending on which partner is Muslim, the other partner’s religion, nationality, residency and whether the couple wants a Nikah or a civil marriage.

This is one area where swapping the bride and groom can genuinely change the legal answer.

How Does Interfaith Marriage in UAE Work?

Muslim marriages in the UAE are governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 on Personal Status, which came into effect in April 2025.

According to the Official UAE Government guidance on Sharia marriage, the Islamic marriage route applies when both partners are Muslim and when the groom is Muslim and the bride is from Ahl Al-Kitaab, such as a Christian woman.

That means “Muslim plus non-Muslim” is not one single category.

Muslim Man and Christian Woman

Under the UAE Sharia marriage framework, a Muslim man may marry a Christian woman.

That does not mean the couple can skip the normal legal process. Identity documents, marital-status evidence, medical screening, witnesses and other case-specific requirements may still apply.

The important point is that conversion to Islam is not automatically required simply because the bride is Christian.

Muslim Man and Hindu Woman

This is different.

The UAE Government’s Sharia guidance specifically describes the permitted interfaith category as a Muslim groom marrying a woman from Ahl Al-Kitaab, such as a Christian woman.

A Hindu bride does not fall into that category under the standard Sharia marriage route.

So if a Muslim man and Hindu woman approach the process assuming they can simply arrange a Nikah in Dubai, they may discover that the legal route they expected does not fit their religious combination.

Muslim Woman and Non-Muslim Man

The UAE’s official guidance states that a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man through the Sharia marriage route without proof of his conversion to Islam.

That is why a Muslim woman marrying a Christian, Hindu or other non-Muslim man should not treat the case as the mirror image of a Muslim man marrying a Christian woman.

The rules are not symmetrical.

Could Civil Marriage Be an Alternative?

Sometimes, and this is where location matters.

Dubai’s federal civil marriage service is designed for non-Muslim couples, so it should not be assumed to solve every Muslim interfaith case.

Abu Dhabi has a different civil marriage framework. The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department states that its civil marriage service is available regardless of religion or nationality to eligible applicants, with Muslim UAE citizens excluded from that route.

That means some foreign Muslim interfaith couples who cannot use the expected Sharia route may have a civil option in Abu Dhabi.

Eligibility still needs to be checked for the actual couple rather than assumed from a social-media post.

What If One Partner Converts for the Marriage?

Conversion is not a checkbox to tick because the wedding date is approaching.

If conversion is genuinely being considered, the couple should understand both the religious significance and the documentary requirements before planning the marriage.

Where proof of Islam is required, an informal statement that someone has converted may not be enough for the authority processing the marriage.

Does a Private Nikah Solve the Problem?

Not necessarily.

A private ceremony may have personal or religious meaning, but it does not automatically create an official UAE marriage record that can later be used for residency, immigration, birth registration or embassy procedures.
