Except there is one fairly important question hiding underneath all of that:

Will the marriage also be officially documented?

Because finding someone to conduct a religious ceremony and completing a legally recognised UAE marriage are not automatically the same thing.

Do You Need an Imam for Nikah in UAE?

For an official Muslim marriage processed through the UAE Ministry of Justice system, the process involves an application, payment, communication with the authorised marriage official and completion of the marriage contract.

The UAE Ministry of Justice marriage contract service then provides for issuance of an electronic marriage contract.

So if your priority is an official certificate, do not start with “Who can perform the ceremony?” Start with “Which legal marriage process applies to us?”

An authorised marriage official, however, is part of the formal process used to document the marriage through the relevant UAE system.

• immigration;
• birth registration;

• official family-status records.

A beautiful ceremony is excellent. A beautiful ceremony followed by “the authority cannot accept this paper” is less excellent.

What Should You Ask Before Booking an Imam?

Before confirming anyone, ask:

• Is this a private religious ceremony or an officially registered marriage?
• Who will issue the marriage contract?
• Will the marriage appear in the relevant official system?
• What documents do the bride and groom need?
• What are the witness requirements?
• Does the wali need to attend?

If the marriage was completed privately without going through the relevant official process, you should not assume that a government authority will simply register the paper afterwards.

Do not assume that the person conducting the religious ceremony personally issues the official government marriage record.

The key is not the title of the person standing in front of you. The key is whether the marriage is being completed through the recognised legal process.
